It would be great if doing laundry directly related to owned clothing. So for example, you can't wear a particular article of clothing because it's dirty. An aspect I never understood with clothing ...

I made a thread back in August since I had this same question, and SimGuruGraham confirmed that they won't become unavailable when dirty.
