Honestly, I never get past a couple generations either, mostly because I can't bear seeing the sims I have grown to care for pass away. I also play rotationally, even if I start with a single household, I end up playing their friends or romantic interest as well. These days, I start all my games with a "hook" or "theme", a basis for my new game, so to speak.
Examples:
1. Supernatural or Sci-fi save, vamps, ghosts and aliens, oh my
2. Orphanage - I started with a household made up of an adult couple and several children who were orphans and followed them as they got adopted, grew up and married
3. Red State Ruby - a young widow with a child moves to Oasis Springs to start a new life, she is a war widow from a rural area so is a bit of a fish out of water in a ethnically, religiously diverse area
4. 100 baby challenge - I tried this one, only got to the second baby before I quit and went back to my normal play, with mods and custom aging, but really enjoyed the game by playing my female sim and the 2 baby daddies Travis Scott and Don Lothario, as well as all the kids the three of them eventually had, they all eventually married other sims
5. Alternate world - I took 3 of my favorite couples from a long running save and mixed up the marriages, so that they were all married to each other differently
