The most obvious thing for me is usually when I have inspiration. Either I saw something, thought of something, or there is something new that I want to mess with. Inspiration comes and goes, and little is less fun than trying to force it. So, yeah, if I do not have the desire to play I simply do not. That has always been the case for me, though.
It helps that I can be inspired by or reuse some of my old inspiration. For example, I have several old sims that I have attachments to and I already know how everything works with them. Rerolling them into a new a idea is easier than having to come up with everything new, and means even fragments of inspiration are viable.
