How do you know when it's time to let go of a story?

I typically have multiple storylines within the same save, so, for me, abandoning a story and abandoning the save are two different things. I never abandon saves. If I'm tired of a story, or a challenge, I move on to a different one, but I sometimes return to previously abandoned stories.
