I always try to have them enjoy the little things in life and unless a sim I am playing is ambitious and really career driven, I don't push too hard on building up skills and getting promoted. Same goes for kids, in the weekends I allow them to have as much fun as possible, they are children after all!
I get them to organise little trips to the woods (Outdoor Retreat) every now and then, go to restaurants together, take the kids to the park, organise play dates for toddlers, etc
I also make a point of having the parents talk and enjoy each other company when the children are in bed.
If I have teenagers in the family, they rarely join the family activities and prefer to stay home or hang out with their friends.
I need to be better at letting my sims enjoy their lives rather than just progressing in their careers or skills. I have to admit that I get a bit too bogged down in constantly wanting them to advance.
