How May Households: I am not certain, but I would guess I have between 20-30 households.
Aging: Active Household only, set to normal - but I use MCCC to customize life stages.. Most the households in game are background for me, like set pieces. I don't need them to age cause I don't pay attention to them. They are just there so that community lots are not empty. If any stand out for some reason (like Judith for instance) I will just go age them as needed.
Story Progression On or Off: I have it on for everyone other than the houses I play, which is different than "Played Households" for me. So I will put some households into the "played households" area of the manager to protect them from culling, but that is because I only want them to stay in game, even though I don't actually play them in my rotation (so they are unplayed "played households"). This happens with some of the premades I love, but don't intend to play, as well as a few of my own made houses I just want in my world in the background.. For these households, I do have SP turned on (custom settings). I also have it on for the actual unplayed households. I do NOT have it on for my actual played households that are a part of my rotational play. Gah, I hope that wasn't too confusing.
Story Progression Settings: Fully Off for the rotational houses that I play. Customized for everyone else. I do not let any of the houses in the "Played Household" area that I don't play die or move out, the other settings are on a per household bases. For the unplayed houses area, none can move out because I don't like the confusion of it. None can quit a job cause I don't like a ton of unemployed sims running around. Then I split the rest of the settings half on and half off because too many people were adopting and having babies. Once someone has done this twice, I turn it off for that house. Plus I don't like roommate houses adopting and having babies, it's weird. Anyone in the unplayed area can retire or die.. Except single parents can't die cause then the kid disappears.
Your Sims or Maxis (Do Maxis ones die?): I play Both. Just depends if a Maxis premade has a story (or look that inspires a story) or not. I also have a lot of love for some based on past game lore and keep them safe (with small play here and there) just for that alone. I don't let the Maxis sims I love die. They are immortal in my game unless I play them, and fall in love with their children, then sometimes I let the next generation take over for the family. But the family in some form is always there. This is only for the ones I care about though. Plenty of premades have been in my game and disappeared and I never even knew they existed. Funny thing, I am not even remotely as protective of my own sims, lol. I do have some immortals I have made, but only a few, mainly they just die.. Keeping immortals in my game is because I like having background characters (friends for my households and such) that I care about rather than random townies..
How do you do it basically: Well, the above, lol. I just play whichever house I am in the mood for. I don't rotate on a schedule, but I find myself naturally switching around a week or so.. If I notice aging could be an issue I just turn it off until I am ready to switch, or I switch when I notice. If I notice I haven't played a house in a while, and aging got messed up, I just switch to that house and play for a bit and then they catch up.. I don't care about seasons being even between houses, I rarely play holidays in my game so.. If I did want a holiday I would just put it on the calendar..
Golly, that feels like a lot, but I tried to answer as best I could. Rotational play can be confusing when you first try it in a game with SP. I went through a lot of trial and error in Sims 3. But I have found I prefer it more in an active world, once you get the hang of it, than how it was in Sims 2.
