I tend to start a single sim and do a rags to riches style of game play. I find that starting my sim with nothing and working them up in the world really helps me get more attached to them. I usually play a sim until one of their children is a teen, then I focus on the teen more than my original sim.
When I get really really bored of game play, I just build. I like to google pictures of nice houses and recreate them in game.
