I have had one incident of jealousy.
My teen Mira was dating two boys. At one point I was playing boy A's household when he got the question to invite her over after school, which was a fun idea so she came over but I was not controlling her. Then boy B came over to visit Boy A's house because he lived in the house down the street. So the jigg was up pretty much. Mira and boy A was out in the front yard so they were right there. Poor little guy, boy B was very sad. Mira was unaffected because she has a much lower romance-bar towards the boys than what they have with her. It was fun to see, worked very well this time. Now she and boy A are boyfrien/girlfriend. He has the option to exchange promise-rings but she doesn't. Guess that she will have the option as well once she gets higher on the romance as well.
They have run into eachother before when in a park but then boy B never got sad because he was not standing close enough. You really have to have them walking into you if it is going to get noticed.

Love this game but augh, I really do not like all the nice environment-buffs. I keep all my houses sparsely decorated. If the kids get home from school sad I want them to be sad. Not that they see five paintings and then the day is great. Really don't want to mod my game right now but if I do get started with that this will be one of the first things that I fix.

I've had serious problems with reactions. Spouses seem oblivious to it, but I've had a child get a negative moodlet that made them sad. However that moodlet was quickly overpowered by "nicely decorated" so they became happy again. Same thing goes for spouses who have actually had a reaction, they get a moodlet. No physical reaction though, and the moodlet wasn't very long lasting as it became overpowered by another moodlet turning them energized (because they were working out while it was happening).
These smart sims aren't very smart.
Yup this. I had to get the no good surroundings mod to offset the weighty nicely decorated aura effects. Too often the moodlet you expect would be expressed is buried beneath a bunch of inane aura effects, resulting in really stupid behavior from sims.
