You don't need to start over. Just have him flirt with a guy. I don't really think sims have a set preference either way. They pretty much like whatever sim you tell them to. Though some relationships are harder to start than others but that really just depends more on the sims mood at the time or if another sim is in the conversation when they try to flirt, not their gender.
