How does uploading to the gallery REALLY work?

I thought I would upload all my important lots and sims to the gallery, for safe keeping, because my game no longer supports tray file downloads( another problem). But when I go to download a lot, it ...

If I take off my uploads that have downloads on my profile from the gallery will the download totals decrease..I am unsure and have tried to look this up with no results. Does anyone know...?
I would like to not have so many uploaded items on my profile at one time but do not want to lose my downloads. Also, I have taken some off and did not see any decrease but I am not sure, it could be delayed when showing me any decrease.
