How locked doors work???

So, i always played with all doors unlocked in my households. Now after more than two years i decided to change that and now im locking all doors completely just out of curiosity and because some of my new sims with other professions are more suited to it.

But i dont have a clue what is the purpose of that, since its way more problematic and annoying than leaving the door unlocked.

Whats the purpose of giving someone the key? i have been always doing that believing that even if you lock the door, if someone has your key, they can just walk in no matter if the door is key locked. But i need to constantly unlock the door everytime i want someone to get in, even if they have my household key lol. I also need to invite them in all the time, its getting really tiresome.

So, i just dont understand this mechanic, or is it bugged? whats the purpose of giving someone the key of your household?

  • I think the key system is a different system to the door locking system. The door locking I think was a way to try and solve the problem of random sims walking in, and controlling which sims could go in different rooms.
The key system came with City Living I think, where sims would just let themselves in to hang out rather than knocking on the door and waiting for sims to invite them in. I like to think of it as family and close friends making themselves at home but they tend to do it A LOT.
Mainly, it's just a way to meet the requirements for the location based aspiration, and I don't really use any of the locking systems - like you say, they cause more problems than they're worth in my opinion!!
  • Locking the doors just stops sims getting into rooms, the only real reason for it is if you want certain rooms to be inaccessible to other sims. For example if you had an en suite bedroom, you could lock the bathroom door so only the sims in that bedroom can use it and other sims won't just walk through to use it. Or if you had a retail store you could lock the door to the break room and only allow staff in. Or if you have a dungeon in the basement, locking doors is also very useful then.
  • I lock rooms in my sims houses so the guest don't wander to use whatever random objects by themselves or randomly find themselves in my sims secret dungeons (unless ofc i want that)

and as for apartment giving key system i mostly use it for neighbors with benefits ;)

but thats just cause i had planted hot dude next doors and he kept showing up at my sims house in towel claiming his shower is broken.... dude we know you had other motives

also sometimes i have multiple households on one lot so I'll make it so they cant access each others houses

but i dont think giving key gives sims access to locked rooms its supposed to just make it so your sims dont have to greet before those sims come in and the sims use your house all they want
  • Yup, i know the reason to lock doors, i did in my other sim to lock cats to get into every single room and making a mess all the time... :) but what i dont understand is the purpose of giving the key to someone.

I didnt notice any difference in sim behaviour when i gave the key to a good looking lady next door. lol. I still had to invite her in.

The most logical reason to giving a key to someone is to let them pass thorugh locked doors, so you dont need to unlock them every time you want someone specific to come in. Its rather ilogical mechanic.
  • I've actually made 'rooms' to lock areas for sims either played or NPC to have access to or not. Other than the main entrance, I usually lock all other entrances/exits to all but household members.

Also, you may want to lock toddlers from going places you don;t want. For example you can keep them from wandering into the street by locking doors to just that toddler.
  • Yup, i know all that. The main "problem" still remains, giving the key to someone is a completely useless and pointles feature. Another one to add to the pile, sigh.
