It does depend on the ages too -- I usually wait to have a second child until the first one ages to the child stage because the child can help entertain the toddler and even fill some of their own skills (like playing dolls with the toddler helps both the toddler Imagination and the child Creativity). Then when the oldest hits teen I'll have him/her get started on cooking skill quickly so he/she can help with the cooking, especially breakfasts if I've sent the adults out the night before and they're sleeping in. (I also keep leftovers in the fridge as well as the quick meals.) I'm trying to get my teen through a Distant phase -- he gets tense because he wants to get away from the family.
