I save VERY often.
And I also make frequent backups of my S4 documents folder. Some of the backups containing extensive changes I keep forever.
But I also learned that there seems to be some kind of reverted Murphy's law. As long as you take care of your data by saving often and backing up frequently you don't need those fallback options because every thing works flawless. The game only crashes if you haven't saved for a really long time and if some important progress could be lost.
So despite all my efforts to cover a possible data loss, I never lost a savegame so far.
