I think it makes a difference whether you play a single family or rotationally. I play rotationally and I couldn't give my sims a wedding outfit for formal for example. I might do that when they have a wedding, but have to remove it afterwards or they will use it in inappropriate places (like someone else's wedding). It also would be pointless for me try to take care of everyday outfits matching each season because when I rotated away the sims would just show up in stuff that I left them in. That's why it's important that their everyday outfits are well rounded. One specific thing that I check is that their toes are covered in the shoes.
