In Sims 4, your sim has plenty of choices on where they want to live. They can live in one of the dorms or student housing on campus, or they can just stay in their current home. They can get pregnant while also going to college, but if they are living in a dorm they have to move to a normal resident. You can have as many students going to school as you can handle, up to the 8 sim limit. I would strongly recommend that for the first time you play a university student, only play one sim attending classes.
If your sim is not living on school grounds, pay attention to when they are supposed to be going to class. If a class starts at 8 am, they won't automatically head off to class, but where the description (in the work section of their info panel) will have a "Go to class" button you can click on that will send them off. If they are living in a dorm, they should automatically go to class on their own.
When it comes to the number of classes your sim can take, they can take anywhere from 1 to 4 classes, and it will last for a total of a week. You don't have classes every day. Each class will have either 2 or 3 classes they have to attend for the week. When the week ends and after the finals (test) are done, and your sim gets their grades, you have a choice to either continue into the next week for the next batch of classes or you can have your sim take a break without losing any of their progress. If your sim decides to drop out they will lose all their progress and there will be a 5 day waiting period before they can reapply. If you decide to have your sim take a break after their grades are reported, they can just pick back up where they stopped. Currently, my sim is doing that. She goes to classes for a week and then takes a break. My sim is also a famous author, so she uses her time off to catch up on other things to keep her fans happy. Her husband dropped out, and he lost all his progress, and this was how I learned all this.
Your sim can have children and also attend college, and they can also work with another job while attending school, but it will be up to the player to make sure all can be balanced between work and school. So in short your sim can very easily have a job where you can have them work from home, and also being a college student.
Earlier I mentioned for the first time only have one sim in college, this will give you a chance to comfortably figure out what is best for your play style. You have an option to take up to 1 to 4 classes, and one of those classes could be an elective class. For the first time a sim goes to college they are required to complete 12 classes, after that, I heard it is only 8 classes to complete a degree. If you send a sim to Foxbury, do not have a bike in their personal inventory, with all the stairs the routing issues will be a total nightmare. Britechester is not an issue.
There is a cheat that will automatically send sims to college without the whole playing through the acceptance part. I use this cheat on all the other sims I want to send to school, but don't plan on playing. Those sims I will also leave in their current home, they will still attend school functions. I would suggest that if you send your sim off to school, make sure you don't have them accept till Friday. This way their first class will be on Monday, and that will give your sim the weekend to get their assignments completed, and yes each class will have different assignments to complete before test day.
I played university students in Sims 2, 3, and 4, and to me, Sims 4 really nailed it.
If there is anything else you want to know, I will try to answer. :)
