For me, I feel bored when there's nothing going on for some period of time. I'll usually take a break from it for some weeks at that point, and pick a temporary goal when I return (maxing a skill, touching up the garden, etc) until an important event triggers.
I don't do anything that would lengthen the time to get to the next life age, like going to university or going on vacation.
I have to admit that university can feel like a very long time, particularly if you turn aging off to prevent the sims from spending half their life studying.
