How to get rid of the red romance bar (without mods or cheats)?

I have a couple that broke up and their romance bars are full-red. I have their friendship about 1/2 the way back up but is there any hope for them to get back together? I even made them a ridiculou...

Keep them apart for awhile, and eventually the romance bar will move to neutral. At that point, you'll want to start over again with low level romance (flirt, complement appearance) and work your way up.
