I'm somewhere in the middle on this. I'd like to add some challenges to my game but to also be able to turn that off if I'm wanting to do my own thing in the game. In other words, I don't want to be overly scripted or pushed but I'm open to some curves in the path. Where some might disagree with me is that I do like some of the happier gameplay, I just like it. What I really like is the ability to make decisions for myself about adding gameplay.
I also think there's a risk of super-imposing other people's value judgements into the game and so far, I think the developers are trying to reach a balance between different types of players. I do think they are listening to feedback. I don't think every pack needs to be dark but they are adding more content like that. There is a childishness, sometimes appreciated & sometimes less so. Packs like Eco-Living seem like a step in that direction with the choice of dirty or clean worlds & the option to turn the effects off. (Whether that's working technically is another matter but they are trying to appeal to ways to customize the game).
My takeaway is to look for what you want in the content but not to begrudge if some content isn't made to accommodate you. I'd like them to give us more scenarios of things that we can do with the game. So far this year, I think they're actually doing that while catering to different ways that someone can play the game.
The biggest thing is that players need to accept that some of the ways to play with the content might not appeal to them but they are there for other people. That's just what I think. Yes, I've had to accept that myself.
