When I am playing another household I see the butler out at bars and festivals but he is always there when I rotate back. The kids are all grown now, graduates of university and the same butler is still there. I've read a lot if posts on this and my butler's behavior seems to be in the minority. I think most of them don't work as intended.
I think it has much to do with their traits. Mine is family oriented, neat and ambitious. His aspiration is to be a chef. He cooks a lot, cleans everything and always played or read to the kids and taught them flash cards. I always made sure my sim praised his work ( boss to butler interaction )
I think the four butlers I had had different traits, 2 were fabulous and super helpful, one was super lazy and annoying and just mooched off us, the 3rd tried to be good but she was quite old and seemed to be having troubles haha.
But yeah the fact that they all died after 4 days was such a downer I stopped playing with them.
