That somebody was me. More miscarriages occur than the average person even realizes. I lost only one. My only daughter, however, has lost a total of five babies. Happily, she now has six children. Two from her first marriage, both girls, two sons her second husband brought to their marriage, and they have had two girls of their own. It happens.
My mom had at least two miscarriages between my brother's birth and mine -- there might have been others where the pregnancy never really took and just seemed like a heavy monthly cycle. That's the main reason why there's a 6 year age difference between my brother and me.
