I just like to make them suit the character.
I have a house with Carrie White and her mother .. Stephen King book Carrie/movies influenced. There are only candles in every room of the house.. well maybe that oil lamp thing and some lanterns. It's not that they don't have electricity or running water I just feel they wouldn't .. well the mother wouldn't let them be extravagant or sinful in her mind. It's spare looking and I think kind of creepy. I have a little shrine closet to lock her in (probably bigger than the movie version) with candles books ect in there. Of course no tv or computer are in that house.
