For now I just reinstalled Sims 3 again and looked for the most challenging/interesting life goals that did not involve just making it to the top of a career or just having a pile of money.
A big part of what makes Sims 4 so boring is the aspirations being easy to do, not giving much points and just being a checklist, Sims can do them all. The rewards are not as interesting as in Sims 3 either.
I really liked how in Sims 3 and 2, the life goal was a big part of the identity, along with traits determining their whims.
I just made four sims in Sims 3: One who wants to explore 6 dungeons in all three travel locations, one who wants to create three monsters, one wants to give a robot sentience, and the last one wants wealth and maxed out fame.
I guess the last one is not as exciting but I tried to cover a wide spread of interests.
But I really miss those fantastic kind of aspirations too. Sims 3 seems to have more aspirations and quite a few are more challenging to obtain as well. Maxing out a skill also takes longer.
As has been said many times before, Sims 4's main problem is that previous Sims games exist.
I had a love/hate relationship with Sims3. If you find it rewarding, go for it. Me? I kept it installed for quite some time, since I got rash and uninstalled Sim2 in my ire. I wasn't going to make that mistake again. But, I stopped playing Sims3 a few weeks prior to the release of Sims 4. Like many, I had grown quite used to the open world and thought it would help my transition to play Sims2 again. Sadly, I forgot that EA hadn't addressed an issue after the very last Stuff Pack came out. I lost all of the children in my favorite family because one of the twins got STUCK on the sidewalk just outside of their house and consequently missed the school bus. This happened more than once. But, I turned the camera to watch while the Mom was caring for their little Toddler sister, so that I never realized there was a problem with one of the twin boys. Found out the hard way. When the SS came and took all three kids away. I was so angry, furious really, that I immediately and without much thought beforehand uninstalled Sims2. After a time, when I realized I wasn't enjoying the Sims3 (the Sims themselves weren't as entertaining on their own, as they were in Sims2) I decided to uninstall Sims3, to leave more than enough room on my computer for what was to come for Sims4. I said upfront, that if the Sims, themselves were too much like they were in Sims3, I wouldn't buy another thing Sims4. I was very glad to see, while not quite as quirky as they were in Sims2, they were more like those Sims, than thankfully, the ones in Sims3. (Wooden and lacking in personality, as I found them.) So, I doubt that I shall ever play Sims3 again. Too many issues and I play on a gaming rig.
