I want these UI changes

There's lots of great info accessible through UI, some could still be added but for the most I'm satisfied with the needed clicking routines. Here's some wishes, that shouldn't be very hard to implement.

#1. Name of save
In main menu, I wish we could see the name we gave the save. We need to load a full menu to see the name of the latest save, and that feels kind of wasted time and clicking, if we just want to make sure that we open the correct save. When making videos I often make temporary saves, but I guess most simmers have more saves, like back up or test saves etc. I understand a file name would disturb the visuals of the lay-out, but could it not be a pop-up when pointing at that big play arrow symbol?

In addition I some times wonder what save I am actually playing. Having access to the save name while the save is running, would be great also!

#2. Info on time and season
From world view, it would be smart knowing what season it is, what time of the day and maybe even weekday, without needing to fully loading a lot to see these things. This might be more useful to a few simmers who have many saves and/or a more technical routine, but I don't see why this kind of info can't be accessible from the world map as the time stamp is the same for the entire save, regardless of lots. With ECO lifestyle we got some new world info, but I still can't find any info on what time/season it is in my game.

#3. B/B Catalog
I wish we could choose to see more than 2 rows of the catalog at the time. In TS2 there was a small arrows symbol allowing to expand the number of rows. I was disappointed that this feature has not been in TS4. I can understand it is less needed when the game is new with a limited buy catalog, but with numerous packs (and CC), scrolling 2 rows feels a tad exhausting, and it gets harder to find what I am looking for. I normally see 1 row and 2 half rows. 5 fill rows would solve this. A bit harder to implement, but do we really need to see half icons? I think scrolling would be handier if we rather scroll a set number of full rows per "scroll".

#4. Traveling to another lot
Why must we always go via the world map? Again, in TS2 we could click on a lot while in game, and load that lot directly, without first seeing the full map. It would save us for some loading time. The game could still ask who we want to travel with, just skipping the world map.

#5. Career history
This might require more behind-the-scene programming, but I really wish we could see a sim's education and career record. We did that in previous series, and it was good because it says something about the person. I don't understand why Uni degree lists under Simology instead of under the career tab, as school info most definitely is under Career while being a student. This also goes for a retired sim - it feels very wrong that there are zero info on a retired sim's past career. You can't tell from the UI whether a sim was always unemployed or actually had a fantastic career until retirement. It's kind of wild that we need to make notes for ourselves outside the game if we want to keep track on a sim's career history.

Fix two of these 5 and I'll be saved for a lot of clicking ;)

  • #2 and #3 are on my wishlist, too.

#5, I think, is available with the Show/Search Sim Info mod. Not 100% sure about this, though.

#6 Capture UI button in camera menu
Add a button or hot key to switch between "Capture UI" and "Don't capture UI" when taking screenshots without having to open the options menu each time. It would be most handy right there next to the screenshot manager button.
  • For me, #1 isn't that important. But would of course be handy as well.

#2 Absolutely. And throw in what weather the different towns have as well, when traveling there. I don't want to waste time going to some festival if its raining/thunderstorm/freezing.

#3 TwistedMexi has a mod for that, using it because I was tired of not being able to expand the catalogue and the amount of time I spent scrolling. (Tmex's Expandable Catalogue, if anyone's interested) Would be nice to have this without mods, though....

#4 is again not that important to me, to travel to another town, I'd need to see the entire map anyway. Now, if I could skip the "who do you want to travel with" thing, I'm in for it! I never invite random sims. Ever. I'd like the OPTION to not see that window.

#5 Yes, yes yes yes! I really miss this feature. I believed we had it in at least TS3, don't remember if it was included in TS2. It would give our sims a history, yeah? Like, its not a fresh sim with his/her first job, but a sim that has experienced a lot. Most of my sims have multiple jobs, max one out move on to the next.

    Very nice suggestions :)

@EnkiSchmidt I don't remember if the SimInfo mod has this, there is so much info that mod can find, so wouldn't be surprised :D Its a must have for me.

    Edit: Removed quote
  • These are some excellent suggestions @Simmerville !

    #1. Name of save
I'll admit, it took me a minute to figure out what you're talking about on this one, because I have never ever used the big "resume playing" arrow in the main menu  For the longest time I never even noticed it was there! I always just went directly to the "load game" option, even back when I only had one saved game. :joy: I'm super observant.

But I agree, it's weird that they give you the option of just resuming your last save but don't tell you which save that is. And since I do have some games with multiple saved versions (such as a main save, and a "backstory" or "alternative universe" save with the same characters) also having a way to check which save I'm in while still in the save (for example in the "options" menu) would be handy.

#2. Info on time and season
Yes yes yes!! When I start up a save, I can never remember what day of the week or time it was when I last left off, and since I play multiple households in a lot of my saves, that would be useful information to be able to check before actually choosing which household I want to start playing. Also being able to check the current weather in other worlds before traveling would be so helpful!

    #3. B/B Catalog
Yes! Being able to expand the catalogue while looking for an item and then collapse it back down while building would be save me a lot of frustration of scrolling back and forth and continually missing what I'm looking for. Having more columns in CAS would also be helpful.

Because I have a lot of custom content, I would also like a filter option to hide all the cc. This would be really helpful when I am participating in a build challenge with a lot that will go on the gallery where I don't want to accidentally use any cc. There is an option to show only the cc, but no option to not show any cc.

    #4. Traveling to another lot
This is the only one where I'm not sure what you're talking about. For lots that are in the same neighborhood that you currently have loaded, isn't there already an option to directly click on the lot (in play mode) and travel there? I've used that, and I don't remember going to the map as part of the process. But I could be remembering wrong...

    #5. Career history
It would be nice to be able to see a sim's past careers as well as the current career/retirement/lack of a career. I've never really thought of that when playing, but it could be useful information to have story-wise.

#6 Capture UI button in camera menu Add a button or hot key to switch between "Capture UI" and "Don't capture UI" when taking screenshots

Isn't this what the "tab" key does? It removes the UI so you can get a screenshot without it. Or, is that not what you're talking about?

Not quite. Normal screenshots (with the c key) do not capture the UI at all. Camera man mode (TAB key) is a step further, it gives better zooming options, makes faded out objects visible again and lets you scroll out real far. But there is a third option, called "Capture UI", that you can tick in the game options. That one includes the whole user interface: the motives window (if opened), pie menu, event score window, the little heads of your active household sims and, most importantly, the speech bubbles.

    Here's an example:

    https://64.media.tumblr.com/bede354f094a231da86020db6c14af55/4412020129106843-05/s540x810/1c6472515612b08d8025ce41a41fc970a1433e6d.png

Now the issue is that unlike Sims 2, Sims 4 considers the speech bubbles as part of the UI. Normal screenshots never include them. So sometimes I want a picture with the speech bubbles visible and sometimes without. A quick key would be immensely helpful.

Yes, that would be in handy! I've had "situations" where I wanted to film UI that was not there, turning it on in settings is too tedious as I would also need to go back to turn it off ;) Perhaps thee is already a shortkey that we did not discover?

Haha, sound like something I could have done (but didn't) )

Hm... maybe I messed up a bit there... I know I have seen the direct travel to another lot in the hood that is already loaded, but I could swear there were also some times I had to go via the map. Or, maybe I was thinking of info on who resides in a house that is nit yet loaded...? Pointing at a occupied residential house will not give the name of who resides there, but will give the option of moving (someone) in. It doesn't even say whether the house is vacant (which I know that particular house was not), so I had to return to the map view to check whether the family had died or something... Sorry for the confusion, I'm confused, too - more in game info would help :)

AND - I agree weather info in world view would be nice, too!
  • I would like an indicator on map view of the time of day, weather, and season.
also in Build mode like we can change what the lot looks like at sunrise, midday, sunset and midnight. I would like to see what the lot would look in the different seasons.
  • @EnkiSchmidt Thanks for the explanation of the screenshot options!

I didn't know all that, because I actually don't use in the in game camera (c key) to get my screenshots. I use the Windows snipping tool, because that lets me name each image, and sort them into different folders on the fly. I take hundreds of screen shots per session, and often switch between households, so having to sort through the mess in a single screenshots folder afterwards is a pain I avoid by doing this. I realized some time ago that the tab key was handy for removing the UI (in addition to being able to move the view more freely) and I use that all the time to compose my shot before using the snipping tool to actually get the picture, but I didn't realize that the c key camera shot would remove the UI without being in tab mode since I don't use it.

Is there a way to show the speech bubbles while hiding all the rest of the UI? This is something I've really wanted to be able to do.
