I wish I could assign seats to my sims.

Don't you think them sitting together would be a bit awkward? Then again, for my sims, that could be a typical Friday...
If that happens, then you simply just don't assign them seats. It may be optional.
But what if you assigned them seats before all of the secrecy?
Then just un-assign it.
