I put 1-3 hampers in my laundry room and non functioning deco hampers in bedrooms & bathrooms sometimes for atmosphere. That way the laundry generates right near the machines, I just pretend there's a laundry chute and my Sims don't have to walk all over the house collecting. I find 1 hamper per 2 Sims to be a pretty good ratio.
Your advice just saved my day! I totally forgot we had deco hampers.

Wouldn't directing kids to put clothes in hamper or machine, be a good way to build responsibility? I don't have the Laundry pack, though, no idea how long it would take or if kids can use the machine at all.
Children can do laundry entirely on their own as long as a washing machine and a dryer are involved and not stacked, however they cannot use the washtub and the clothesline. I guess it does build responsibility, but that comes pretty much automatically as long as you send them to school every now and then.
Edit: Someone beat me to it!
