I don't know why my experience is different, but I run a winter holiday annually(at least 4 times now) that has my sims drinking, then doing a cannonball into the pool then followed up with a warm self at the fire place with zero deaths. I've always been in Granite Falls as it is my "winter vacation" holiday. I do run a few mods/some cc too.
