Is it possible to adopt relatives with the Life and Death Pack?

I had a sim adopt his new wifes kids, so you should be able too. The problem was when he adopted them their biological father was removed completely from the family tree. This was a few months ago, I think the option is under the relationship category now. It is different than care dependent.
