I'd say people really oversell the randomness. Ultimately, many of the jungle lots you can't access don't have anything of note. Maybe a chest if you're lucky. They look pretty, but that's about it.
I've seen some really cool temples, though, and it's fun to build in Selvadorada, since it's got such a different atmosphere to the "suburban USA" setting of the rest of the game. Making a Central American dictatorship in the grips of a civil war is fun as heck to build, and you can make some really cool rental lots that don't make sense in Granite Falls. I'm really pleased with my grungy backpacker hostel, and I even made a ruined temple with some coffins for my vampire Sims to vacation in.
