I have to admit, the lecture about counters is one I don't bother with. Primarily because while we don't allow our RL cats on the counter, we also know that they go up there anyway when they think we can't see them. That and it's the only way to get to the top of the fridge.
I know there's a trait that pets can have that makes them take longer to be trained out of bad behaviors, so it's possible your pet had that.
Or it was just a cat being a cat.
My RL dog from years ago wasn't allowed on the furniture. (Boy, have things changed with our Beagles!) We had a glass-paned front door in that house. I left and on a hunch walked back up to the door to find Puddles getting onto the love seat. Was he ever surprised when I opened the front door to holler at him. LOL I have read somewhere that placing a long sheet of aluminum foil upon the seats is supposed to deter a dog. I shall have to see if it works.
