Is the content that one has purchased a reflection on one's play style?

No guarantee. EA knows it's got a lot of people who are completionists, while sometimes items can be really useful for obscure builds no matter what pack they're in. I'm a completionist, but when I'm building I also like to use items from as many packs as possible. I bought it, so I'm going to use it.
