I usually wait for sales to get the packs I want, but I have skipped over packs I don't want. I do want Sims 4 Life and Death, and For Rent in the newest packs. For Rent was on sale, but due to people saying how many bugs there are I skipped it for the moment. Most of the new packs I have skipped as well.
As for my game play type packs, I tend to get packs with animals, and any supernatural things. I also get packs like High School years, or packs that remind me of previous Sims games.
However, even with getting packs with the supernatural, I tend to have normal sims too, and both just have normal lives.
