Sometimes, I will simply put those gorgeous lighted potted things on the mantle to help decorate. I use a medieval fireplace that I prefer over all the others. I do wish we could hang stockings and/or garland across the front of them, even so. Tried to find a picture, but I didn't take one of the fireplace, sadly — at least not decked out for Winterfest, at least. I just know you'll find it in the plant section under Decorations. It's potted and looks like a mini tree with branches. It lights up.
Here is the medieval fireplace, in Erik's Music Room: As you can see, it has lots of slots in it. But this is the regular non-holiday set up.
