I do know how to access the cheat to enable making changes, but the last time I did that I got that very odd code that caused a failure to save. I seriously don't wish to go through all of that again. But, I also dislike the fact that my Sims have to dress in their outerwear just to keep from getting chilled. Please, and thank you, in advance.

I don't think so without enabling build mode. Do you have snowy escape? I wonder if those little heaters would work?

But I haven't had any issues saving through that method and I've been adding thermostats to my dorms for a while.

So long as an active sim is not living in the dorm, you can build/buy as normal.

You can even build with an active sim living in the dorm by using the cheat.

I usually go through Manage Worlds to edit the dorms, I can't remember if you're able to once your sim is moved in. But I haven't had any issues saving through that method and I've been adding thermostats to my dorms for a while.

if you're worried about your save failing again, create a backup save before trying the cheat again. that way if it ruins your save again, you have a backup to continue playing with that world

But, my Sims are living in the Wyvern Hall Dorm.

@Jyotai I used the cheat not very long ago and it triggered some very weird code that caused a failure to save. Hence my question. How does one avoid that unhappy side effect of using the cheat?

It is absolutely possible to build and modify dorms as long as you don't have any Sims enrolled. You don't need a cheat for that.
