I'm thinking now that it looks like they are probably looking to reboot the franchise, which is a way too common thing in entertainment. Sims 4 will become The Sims (1) and the previous games will get erased and forgotten, never to be compared again. Then the franchise will go in a whole new direction, doing whatever EA wants to do with their trend simulator, hiring new "innovative" devs who've never known what the original Sims was. Then they'll be rid of the higher standards of quality of the previous games.
And, unfortunately, this is becoming standard practice in related businesses. Take a blockbuster or bestseller and remake it, start it all over for a new generation, and change whatever doesn't fit the modern trends of the time, treading all over the original material.
