50/50 for me, really- I guess you could say I play sims like a storytelling improvisation game. I like being able to determine who my characters are and what challenges they face, and then give it a try, and be surprised by failures and mistakes and other randomness along the way. That's a lot more fun for me than just making up a story from scratch and having to make up everything by myself.
(By the same token, just trying to "win" the game by maxing skills and career and aspirations would get boring for me really fast.)
