I have 8 in my family and every time I've had them go to a restaurant, they're not part of a group to begin with. I'd have to manually have them form a group, so I just made a group for them and I start a gathering whenever I take them out to eat. Maybe it's just my game. Whenever NPCs invite my Sims out to dinner it always works, but just not with my whole family. I'm not too bothered now that I found a solution, but I thought it was worth mentioning to see if anyone else was having the same issue.
