It's impolite but often necessary -- you don't want people (or Sims) swelling up with gas they can't get rid of. What makes a difference is the reaction -- if a person is slightly embarrassed and begs pardon, that's one thing but someone who lets out a long one then laughs about it is totally different. And sometimes you feel free to let go in the privacy of one's own home or around family/close friends, but you wouldn't do that during a job interview or on a big date (so better not order those franks & beans for lunch or dinner B) ).
