I don't think the sims have ever "cared" when their children were sick to be fair. In the sims 2 there was comfort soup but parents wouldn't say roll a want to make it for their sick child, they may roll to learn how to make it but that's irrespective of their children.
If you don't have any sims with the family aspiration you can't make comfort soup. You can make a certain juice from the juicer that will cure sickness but again the parent won't roll for that, they will have to be told. Sims 2 parents can autonomously worry about their kids but I've never seen this happen whilst the child is ill.
With the sims 4 I've never been able to give a child medicine or indeed place it in their inventory. I do like parents being able to write their child a note for school, that's a nice touch. The last time I had a sick child in game they automatically stayed home from school which would have been nice of their parents weren't going to work.
That's really odd, I've always been able to put medicine in children's inventories and have them take it. I can't recall offhand if they can order it themselves from a computer, but I usually have an adult buy about 50 of them at a time and put them in the fridge. When my Sim kids get sick, I just open the fridge and place one in their inventory and have them take it. It's always been this way in my game.
