Yeah, the collectibles are not quite as lucrative as they used to be. My Sims usually scout the Johnny Zest neighborhood. I replaced his lot with a garden park that had pretty much everything there a Sim could use for a prolonged stay. There used to be 13 rocks that would spawn in that neighborhood everyday. Now I'm lucky if there are 8, most of which are capsules. The rest are just dig sites since C&D.
Since my Sims have the full 'My Sim Trophies' collection from the capsules, I just sell them unopened. They are worth more that way, in total, than opening each of them. I never thought about trying that with the fossils but maybe I should. If they're not needed, perhaps they can also sell unopened for more?
As said by others here, spawning as rocks or dirt mounds seems to be random. As also mentioned, the dirt mounds should be dug up everyday. If it's done regularly, they can also eventually give better quality finds.
Crystals have gotten harder to find and collect but are very much needed for JA. Maybe that's why they made lightning strikes in Seasons produce them? Has anyone played the Scientist career lately? I know it used to have a great quantity of rocks to chisel. Have any of those changed to dirt mounds?
One of my Sims is currently a scientist and it doesn't look like soil patches have replaced the rock mounds there, so at least there's that!
