I'm on gen 6? (I call it gen 5 most of the time because I think of the founders as gen 0). I don't cheat, but I also don't follow challenge rules. I find them stifling and like for my Sims to move around and do things freely. I mentioned before that my Sims move every so often.
This is the fourth house they've lived in, but I've built six houses for them in total (some of them are secondary homes), so I guess it works out to one home built per generation. My legacy Sims aren't modest and their home reflects that. It's been fun for me to try a more extravagant playstyle.
As an idea, I think it could be fun to experiment with different styles of homes every so often (like trying a tiny home, a beach home, a palace, etc.) but it would depend on the family's funds.
