Legacy's
Is there set rules/guidelines? I've been playing since the original Sims released but never focused on the legacy play much until halfway through 3 where I blew up my computer trying, LoL. Vampire's.....

That is only true in the sense that you won't get the in-game achievement messages on time. Like, you'll get the 10-generation achievement message at the 11th generation instead.
Otherwise the way you structure your legacy is completely up to you and what you think is fun ☺
