I think it's still necessary if you want harvestibles, and I suspect they would turn brown and possibly die? I've never tried that - I grow dragonfruit as fertiliser for my perfect plants (and fertilise the dragonfruit with pomegranates - it seems weirdly cannibalistic to fertilise a plant with its own harvestables). (Edited to add: I'll experiment with this tonight & see what happens.)
Right now, I'm working on a growfruit tree for fertilising the 'perfect' plants - we got to 'magnificent' last night! Almost there... . (I get way too excited when my Sims wake up - will it be a fertiliser day? Will any my plants evolve?)
