There have been many popular TV shows, books, movies and games made since Witches first started appearing in the Sims that have a variety of spell-caster types in them. People want to make their favorite characters or take their inspiration from what appeals to them. They might not want to make just witches or just mages (I don't want to make mages for instance.. well I take that back I have one for sure). I would have been upset if they had been called mages.
