Widowed sims will gradually slip towards the "Single and loving it" lifestyle if they don't find another partner.
I've considered it a bit harsh at first, considering that many people in reality, who are widowed later in their life (meaning 60+), don't seek another relationship as a sign of being faithful to their partner even beyond "till death do us part".
Then, my grandma is widowed for over 20 years and doesn't seem to struggle (though I guess it's partly because her garden and a cat keep her occupied), so maybe the way TS4 behaves isn't that far from reality...
