I can see a good reason for them updating whims this time, actually. Whims take many things under consideration: traits, aspiration, proximity to a loved one, skill, season, recent socialization, a bb item and of course, emotions. Theoretically, lifestyles and sentiments should contribute to these as well.
I would argue that this whims system has the potential to be the best we’ve ever had, it’s just that we need more whims and some of the existing ones are really thoughtless (“ask someone to go steady” when the sim is already married and not in any other romantic relationships, or the more pervasive bb whims.) I know they haven’t added whims in a long time but hopefully this larger update has inspired a change there as well.
