Pros
Cons
- Emotions. Primarily for their tendency to create unpredictable situations. The changes in behaviours, animations and voice acting really make the gameplay more dynamic.
- Art style. Put simply, it's a nice looking game.
- Integrated worlds. No more having to make a new save for a new world, or having to worry about bugs if moving Sims from one world to another.
- Voice acting. Great voice actors this time around, especially the tense/angry voice acting. I find it quite funny.
- Rotational play. More control over Sims between saves like in TS2, with the optional bonus of universal ageing.
- More decor items. Switching between TS2 and TS4 makes me appreciate the amount of decor and matching styles of furniture in TS4 big time.
- Game Packs. I have enjoyed almost all game packs this game has released so far. When the studio narrows their focus, they shine big time.
- Build mode. It's a lot faster and easier to put together and decorate a house.
- The gallery. I'm addicted to it.
- Animations. The smoothness of the animations, the amount of idle animations, and the varied animations between emotional states make Sims much more interesting to watch.
Cons
- Emotions. I'm currently using two mods (negative emotions boost uncomfortable and happy buffs changed to fine) to tweak emotions because of the excessive happy buffs. Personality traits and their associated emotional buffs need to be stronger, if not dominant over other buffs.
- Build mode. It would be nice if foundations were a little more flexible. Being able to have foundations of different heights or being able to place walls on the ground if there is a foundation on the lot would be a big improvement. edit: forgot to mention terrain tools. I'm a bit tired of all lots being as flat as a pancake.
- Animations. Despite having varied animations, some particular animations are being overused. The 'ask a question' animation, and the 'point to hand' animation are used way too much. A few more mundane animations, such as opening things by the handle or interacting with kitchen counters, would make the game look a bit better.
- Expansion packs. While I enjoy them for the most part, some packs, such as CL and GTW, didn't go in depth enough in some areas outside of aesthetics. I'm still a bit peeved that retail is probably the most lacklustre business option in the game now that DO and C&D has been released. Retail should have been its own pack.
- Sim relationships. More dynamic relationships between Sims. Currently it feels like Sims are either friends, enemies, or lovers, despite the various titles in the relationship panel that Sims can have with each other. Implementing various relationship types with corresponding gameplay would make building relationships between Sims much less mundane (this area of the game hasn't changed much over the last ~17 years).
- Loading screens. I appreciate the smaller hoods because of the intimate environment they create, but the loading screens between lots make the game feel a little too intimate sometimes. I find that my Sims stay at home a lot.
