Living in your retail store
What are the challenges I would face if I have my sims living in an apartment above their retail store? I know I will have to buy a "home lot" elsewhere. My thought is to just have an empty land on ...

Just keep your doors locked and pay your bills through your phone/computer.
And keep in mind that Sims can only travel to work/school from their home lot - but I doubt it's troublesome if you have one Sim that stays behind on the retail lot (I haven't tried that myself).
