Week 2, Part 2 - Someone turns out to be musically gifted!
Royal Envoy: "Would you STOP following me, please?"
Gavin: "Who's following whom here?! Danny and me are on a date!"
Royal Envoy: "I will take my leave now. Meanwhile you familiarize yourself with piano music in preparation for investigating the Capp family heirlooms."
This woman, Gavin thought, was the strangest client he'd ever had as a detective and journalist! She wanted him to help with her investigation, but the tasks she gave him were all vague and seemingly inconsequential. She followed him, yet pushed him away when he interacted. The last lingering doubt vanished: This was the behaviour of a person with an ulterior motive!
The Reeds were in luck: An apartment neighbor of theirs by name of Hank had gotten hired as the pianist this evening. They approached him with their request.
Hank: "You want what? Practise on the piano? Like, this one? In full public?"
Daniel: "Don't worry, Gavin won't touch anything. I'll do it."
Hank: "Yes, that just bumped up your damage deposit to one hundred simoleons. That's my reputation at stake here, kids."
Hank's worries were unfounded. Daniel's playing utilized a different style than his own, but the young man was no less skilled. In fact, they both hit the spot just above hobbyist enthusiasm, good enough to get hired for the occasional gig, but not a full career in music. (Skill level 5, specifically.)
The next evening Daniel got invited to play at Blue Velvet, a small club at the Detroit river. No pay, but all the tips and drinks he could keep.
For Daniel this was all about the new experience, the emotions it would instill in him. He might end this day on a mad rampage or in a loving embrace with everyone in the club and by his nature he was perfectly fine with either and anything in between, preferring neither.
Carried away by the his own playing, Daniel for a moment thought to have seen something glitter in the fireplace. He got up and went to investigate.
Gavin: Where has Danny gone? Outside for a spell, probably. Can't blame him. The smoke from this thing is something else. Must be ancient by Detroit standards.
Meanwhile Daniel - or rather Danilo of Everdew - went to take a closer look at the fireplace.
Unnoticed by Gavin, Daniel emerged from the fireplace just when the envoy and a weirdly dressed clubgoer looked his way.
The latter ran away in panic at the sight of a blue fairy swiftly growing to human size.
The envoy watched a little longer, before she decided that she probably had had a drink too many.
Gavin: "YOU here? Again? Anyway, what was that about the fireplace?"
Envoy: "What fireplace? I didn't mention any..."
Gavin: "...(curseword) fireplace! I heard you mumble to yourself about it!"
Daniel: "Let it rest. It's nothing."
Gavin: "So what did the "nothing" consist of? You poked the fireplace while she wasn't looking, right?"
Daniel: "You bet! I found change money from the 18th century that's worth five thousand simoleons today, an ornate ring and another key."
(That money doubled their household funds.)
Gavin: "That's wild! The archive and the nightclub date back to the 1760s, right after the British took over Detroit from the French. Someone went to a lot of trouble to hide the keys in the New World."
Daniel: "Yeah. And all without me notici... Uh."
Gavin: "So she's the envoy of Veronaville and you are, what? MI6?"
Daniel: "I got sent to Detroit, and to this neighborhood specifically, but I can't disclose any more."
Gavin: "Keep the details to yourself. I just needed you to know that I figured it out. Love you, baby."

It was great reading how Daniel and Gavin went in doing this week’s quest tasks. It would have given the Royal Envoy and the other person at the nightclub a surprise when Daniel turned into a small fairy version size when investigating the fireplace, then suddenly returning back to his normal fairy size again! 🙂It is good that he now has the ornate ring and the Capp family ring.
