Week 4, Part 2
Blue Velvet nightclub... a slow night so far. And unfortunately their target wasn't on site - not even in sight - anywhere.
Gavin: "We have a question about a custo..."
Bartender: "Oh, c'mon, Reed, you know how this goes! Drink first, information second."
Gavin: "...three nonalcoholic Caipirinhas."
Bartender: "The only cheaper option would have been tap water. Alright, three toothless piranha coming up."
Bartender: "Your girlfriend said she'd be at the lake tomorrow to take a ferry. Destination: life in luxury."
Gavin: "There is no ferry station at the lake. It was probably just her being funny with words again."
Enter Tina, who mastered the City Native aspiration and is basically a walking encyclopedia about Detroit:
Tina: "Actually, the muddy barbecue spot right behind this club, that's an on-demand hop on and off point. Few know that."
The Royal Envoy could linger there with her luggage and nobody would know that she was waiting for the steamboat...
Gavin: "What would be the next stop?"
Tina: "None on our side of the border. If she enters the ferry, it'll take the envoy into Windsor."
One chance to capture her! (One chance to capture her without causing trouble internationally, that was.)
The morning mist over the lake hadn't fully dissipated when there already was a lone fisher at the shore. Tina had been right as right gets: It was the envoy, waiting for the ferry to drop by.
She now wore an eyepatch that was part of the Thor family treasure and looking uncannily familiar to Daniel. While the item was centuries old, from his perspective only a little less than two years had passed since he had worn it.
Gavin: "We need to get the drop on our target quickly."
Daniel: "I have you covered! Seeing me in this form should slow her down a notch."
(I skipped a chunk of posts regarding Gavin's and Daniel's relationship. At this point Gavin knows that Daniel is a fairy. The full story is on my blog.)
Envoy: "Oh. So you were real..."
Daniel: "I'm the spirit bound to protect the treasure and who sustains the curse on the Capp family ring. You woke me up when you poked around the fireplace where it was hidden. Now deal with the consequences of your actions!"
It was only half a lie, when you thought about it. While not a "spirit", Daniel wasn't quite a mortal either, and in this moment he was indeed protecting the treasures, even though he hadn't known about them only last week.
Envoy: "Listen, spirit, it's not what it looks like! Those families I'm beholden to are my undoing. What about MY happiness? All I want is a hot tub to relax in after my work."
Daniel: Who wouldn't? But before not all of Culpepper 19's residents have a hot tub together, nobody should have one for themselves!
Envoy: "And you, clickbait-poster, know that if you report me, there will be great unrest in all of the principality. People would never again trust me or you."
Gavin: Why, yes, them not trusting you again is the intention here! But why wouldn't they trust ME again? Must be a cultural thing that we don't understand here. "No snitching" taken to the extreme.
Envoy: "But if you forgive me and let me go, then I'll stop and go my way. The money this would have brought is not worth losing my job and my reputation."
Gavin: "Lady, I got offered better deals from actual career criminals! And heard better lies from my three year old."
Gavin: "But then again, I have the feeling I should leave the decision to you, pirate. There's a history here that I'm not part of. If you say this person embodies the spirit of the era you're missing, then for you I'd..."
Daniel: "No, stop right there! If she had come forth about some noble purpose, even if only in the form of another lie, I might have considered her "offer". But it never occured to her to so much as pretend to be a good person."
Gavin: "You heard my butterfly! Meet a souvenier from my old career!"
Envoy: "You can't just go around apprehend people! It's illegal!"
Gavin: "You think a former police officer wouldn't have his paperwork in order? For your information, we already informed your lordships about our suspicions. If you run now, you confirm them. You get a mark on your head, meanwhile I still get paid for my efforts."
Of course the envoy tried to run. She never thought things through. Like the fact that Daniel with his wings was faster than her or that, while technically she was stronger than him, as a former pirate Daniel wouldn't hesitate to fight dirty.
And so the thief was apprehended.
Next stop: Tartosa
And Veronaville.
(I didn't save after the knighting ceremonies, because it would take them out of their careers. Just took the pictures and made a note that in Veronaville (ingame: Ondarion) they enjoy special status now.)
Well done, Knighthood is well deserved
