Lots and Landscaping

This tweet from SimGuruPopcorn has some responses with great ideas on how to landscape and fill up those larger lots when using them for your tiny house builds.

I built my tiny home on a 30x20 lot and now I'm about to start the landscaping.

My sim is still working on her dark arts skills so I want to create a little hidden area for her cauldron and related magic items.

What objects do you use to fill up all that empty space?
  • Here's a WIP build on a 20x15 lot in Newcrest I've been fiddling with the last couple days. It's 30 tiles for the house with a 2 tile woodworking shed. Thinking about getting rid of the shed to add a foundation and stairs to the front door. The landscaping so far is pretty much finished though. I went minimal with it because I wanted it to be a starter home for a single Sim or a couple. It's a bit over the standard cost for a starter now though, but still affordable.

Anyway, here's the front. So far just a flower planter box, couple flower bushes and a tree:

Right side. Not much here either, just a slim hedge and climbing flowers. You can see a little bit in the backyard now.

I imagine someone living in a tiny home would love nature, so I went with that theme here with; a picnic table/bbq, campfire, chairs, lanterns, wild flowers a BIG oak tree, three garden pots, etc.

The biggest thing as you can see, of course, which takes up over half the backyard is the fishing pond I placed from debug mode. I added a fountain and some lily pads to it just for a bit of interest.

Not sure what to put in place of the shed yet. I originally just had the woodworking table against the left side of the house. But I thought perhaps Sims would like to work on it even when it's raining, hence the shed idea. Added the transparent roof in case someone would rather use it to shelter the plant pots when out of season. I think it looks a bit odd though, especially with that silly flag. Don't know what I was thinking. lol

I might add some rocks here and there or a trail of stepping stones from the front walk to the backyard, maybe another tree or two, perhaps some more flower bushes or some low lying flowers under the front yard tree, etc. I love using that pond though when I have a lot of space to fill up. Especially for my more outdoorsy Sims who like to fish and catch frogs to breed.

Other things you can add is a patio area with a hot tub, a gazebo seating area, pool (as mentioned), a large fenced in garden, or a potting shed/greenhouse. If your Sims have children, there's always those huge toddler playground pieces, the water slide, swings, jungle gym, monkey bars, and could make a sandbox for them as well.

Hope this helps, and Thanks again! I'm having a blast with this pack! Even though my tester Sim was killed by the Murphy bed the very first time she tested it. lol Opps! That set the build back a little, since I hadn't saved in awhile, but it's coming a long. Good luck on your build, would love to see it when it's finished!

    Happy Simming! <3

First of all, I would move the house closer to the street to make the back area bigger.

Either that, or a padded room or a jail cell, heh! :D

    Seriously though, awesome build there!

  • I learned how to landscape from great streamers on Twitch xsorcier and chloessims. Twitch is great because you learn how to build in real time. I like a lot of the ground cover that came with Vampires and Island Living and Jungle Adventures to fill underneath trees and bushes. I also like putting some outdoor game play areas like a farming section, a kid section, a water section, an outdoor eating section, etc. After awhile it becomes really easy to fill the area. Also using the roof tool you can make a greenhouse if you wanted that doesn't count towards the tile limit tip I learned from Kippsidaisy.

Wish I could help. But my sense of landscaping is just putting bushes or flower beds in front of the house and calling it a day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Well, that and building a deck/veranda in the back. A nice seating area on top of wood or stone, overlooking a fenced-in area or a garden. But I'm all about those flower beds in the front.
